In Memoriam Mbah Surip; The "Reggae" maestro of Indonesia

Especially, considering that Mbah Surip who was born in Mojokerto, East Java 5 May 1957 is just started to enjoy the result of his struggle. The song title "Tak Gendong” (pickaback) which is becom his hits, is always present in every music event in television. Not that only, the MP3 downloaded for this song as a handpone tone reach nearly one billion rupiah.

Mbah Surip, is a humble artist who has long been survive in the cross street of Jakarta. Indeed, he is just popular for people in Indonesia for this later time. But in fact, his songs already present by him from one place to another for a long time ago. Unfortunately, the options to bring reggae music with a simple accompaniment, just make a certain behavior. New opportunities are coming now, when the taste of Indonesian pop music is "easy listening". Simple Songs of Mbah Surip, could finally enter the recording studio.

Mbah Surip who was born with the original name Urip Riyanto bin Achmad Soekotjo, in fact are not ordinary people. Mbah Surip is a graduate from the Engineering School Pasna Wiyata in 1974 and graduated from the STM Brawijaya in 1977. He also had to continue his study at Mechanical Engineering University of Sunan Giri Mojokerto branch in 1979. Before deciding to become artists, Mbah Surip worked from oil drilling to a diamond mine in overseas such as Canada, Texas, Jordan, and California.

But his interest in music, especially reggae, make Mbah Surip decided to stop working and living in Jakarta. He then joined with a variety of artists communities often such Bulungan, Bengkel Theater Rendra and Taman Ismail Marzuki. In his music trip, Mbah Surip has issued several albums, among others, IJO ROYO-ROYO (1997), INDONESIA I (1998), REFORMASI (1998), TAK GENDONG (2003) and BARANG BARU (2004). He even received an award from MURI for action singing.

Now, there is no longer Mbah Surip with rasta hair style such a reggae singer and a unique laugh.. In the middle of his current popularity that increased, Mbah Surip, the eccentric artists and coffee drunkard, leave to meet his Creator. Mbah Surip buried in the area of the Bengkel Theater, Depok, West Java. Mbah Surip funeral procession begins with the wedding ceremony of his third daughter's. Both bride say their wedding word in front of the Mbah Surip corpse, the artists who often say 'I Love You Full'.
